St. Mary’s Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church which is situated in Old Park Road, Jaffna. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jaffna and is also known as “Periye Kovil” by the local Tamils. Legend says that the son of Jaffna king Cankili, who converted to Catholicism was killed by the king himself on this spot and it is where the prince’s ashes were buried. Construction of the church began in 1789 and was completed in 1794.
