Udawalawe National Park is situated on the border of Uva and Sabaragamuwa provinces. It is a famous national park in Sri Lanka in order to provide a sanctuary for the wild animals being displaced due to the construction of the Udawalawa Reservoir. The park is 119 square miles in size and was established in June 1972. The park is famous for water birds and Sri Lankan elephants.

Getting to Udawalawe National Park

From Belihuloya travel along the Colombo – Batticaloa Highway passing Aluthnuwara and Balangoda up to Kahatapitiya. Then travel along the Kalthota Road passing Weligepola and Pallebedda. Turn left at Ranwala junction onto the Pelmadulla – Embilipitiya Highway and then turn left at Udawalawe junction bus stop onto Thanamalvila Road to reach the Udawalawe National Park.
