Sankhapala Raja Maha Viharaya is situated in Pallebedda in the Sabaragmuwa province. It is an ancient Buddhist temple which stands majestically on a rocky mountain. The existence of a monastery at this location is proved by Brahmin inscriptions which can be found on the rock, dating back to a period sometime before the birth of Christ. According to folklore, Pussa Deva who was a warrior of King Dutugemunu had resided here. Pussa Deva’s name can be found mentioned in the rock inscriptions over here.
