Pothgul Viharaya is an ancient temple situated in Polonnaruwa. It was built by King Parakramabahu the Great during 12th century BC. “Pothgul” translates to the place where books are kept or book storage. This is the place where the largest library was situated in ancient Sri Lanka. There is a circular chamber built out of bricks which is one of the highlights of Pothgul Viharaya. There are also four small statues at the four corners of this structure.

Getting to Pothgul Viharaya

From Polonnaruwa travel approximately 2.3 km along the Maradankadawala-Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu Highway towards Janapada Mawatha. Then turn to Bund Road and travel approximately 2.2 km along this route to reach the Pothgul Viharaya.
