The Gal Oya Dam is an embankment dam that is situated in Ampara district. It is also known as “Inginiyagala Dam”, and creates one of the largest reservoirs in the country, the Gal Oya Reservoir. Construction of this dam and reservoir began in August 24, 1949 and completed in 1953. Water from the reservoir is used to power the Inginiyagala Power Station, which is a hydroelectric power station located just downstream of the Gal Oya Dam.
