Vijithapura Raja Maha Viharaya is situated along the Thoniyagala – Kalawewa – Galewela Road in Kekirawa. It is believed to be built on the winning grounds of the battle between King Dutugemunu, who reigned the Anuradhapura kingdom from 161-131 BC, and the Indian Tamil king, Elara. According to legends, King Dutugemunu built a temple embodying the winning post which denoted victory, which is known as the Vijithapura Raja Maha Viharaya. The temple consists of many ruins belonging to the Anuradhapura era. The most popular attraction here is the “Kadu Ge Gala” which is believed to be the stone used to sharpen the swords of King Dutgemunu and his army.
