The Trincomalee Harbour is a natural harbour situated in Trincomalee Bay which is also known as Koddiyar Bay. The Trincomalee Harbour is an iconic and historically important harbour in Sri Lanka. The Portugese, Dutch and the British have all engaged in sea battles to control and conquer the harbour. It was formerly a British naval base which was taken over by the Ceylonese government in 1956 to be developed as a commercial port. The Trincomalee Harbour is one of the largest natural harbours in the world with 1630 hectares of water and an entrance channel which is 500 m wide.

Getting to Trincomalee Harbour

From Trinco take the Kandy Road and go up to Customs Road. Then turn to Kanthasamy Kovil Road and later to Dockyard Road. Travel about 3.5 km down this road to reach the Trincomalee Harbour.
