Introduction to Tharulengala Raja Maha Viharaya

Tharulengala Raja Maha Viharaya (Tharulengala Forest Hermitage) is an ancient historic temple that is situated in Hulanuge in the Ampara district. The temple is located on top of a 633 feet high rocky hill named Karadahela. It is believed to have been built by King Kavantissa before 2nd century BC. The temple was also known as Habutagala Viharaya and Karadahela Viharaya in the ancient past. Today, all that remains are stone ruins of the temple scattered over 20 acres of thick forest area.

Unique features of Tharulengala Raja Maha Viharaya

The temple has two unique attractions for which is well renowned. The temple houses a 41-foot reclining Buddha statue that is made out of clay and bricks. This is considered to be the 2nd oldest reclining Buddha statue in Sri Lanka. This structure lies in a drip ledge cave that is 175 feet long, 41 feet deep and 31 feet high, which serves as the main image house at the entrance of the temple. Unfortunately this Buddha statue has been badly damaged by treasure hunters.

From Arugam Bay travel along the Colombo – Batticaloa Highway passing Sengamuwa and Lahugala up to Hulanuge to reach Tharulengala Raja Maha Viharaya.
