Taprobane Island is a private island situated on southern coast, opposite the village of Weligama. The island is also called “Galduwa” or “Rock Island” and consists of one villa. The island was named by its founder Maurice Talvande who named it based on the Greek word for Sri Lanka. Its ownership went from hand to hand and finally to the Australian businessman Geoffrey Dobbs who is an Anglo-Australian hotelier who founded the Galle Literary Festival.

Getting to Taprobane Island

From Mirissa travel along the Matara Road passing Polwathumodara up to Weligama to reach the Taprobane Island.
