It is one of the few religious sites which gather multi ethnicity in the form of Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the Vedda people. The temple is dedicated to God Kataragama for Buddhists and God Murugan for Hindus. It is a very popular temple complex of Sri Lanka visited by both locals and tourists.

From Tangalle travel along the Colombo – Galle – Hambantota – Wellawaya Highway passing Kalametiya up to Hambantota. Travel along this route and turn to Kandasuridugama Raja Mawatha. Travel approximately 21.2 km along this route up to Kataragama to reach the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya.
