Martello Tower is a small circular-shaped fort which is situated in Hambantota. It has been inspired by the Martello Tower Point in Corsica that survived an attack in 1794 by the British Royal Navy. Martello Tower in Hambantota was built by the British between 1804 and 1806. Materials used to build the fort were limestone and coral. It is 7.6 m tall with a base diameter of 12 m. It used to house the Land Registry of the Hambantota Kachcheri. At present it houses a fisheries museum and is open to the public.

Getting to Martello Tower

From Tangalle travel along the Colombo – Galle – Hambantota – Wellawaya Highway passing Netolpitiya and Ambalantota up to Hambantota to reach the Martello Tower which is situated along Kachcheri Road in Hambantota.
