Malwila Raja Maha Vihara is a historically significant ancient monastery which is situated in Wanathavilluwa in the Puttalam district. The monastery is believed to have been built by the son of the great King Dutugemunu, Prince Saliya. It is also called as “Malwila Ruins” because the site has ruins of a dagoba, a Buddha statue, several stone pillars and moonstones which signify the entrances to a building structures.

Getting to Malwila Raja Maha Vihara

From Kalpitiya travel along the Palavi-Kalpitiya Road passing Etalai and Norochcholai up to Palaviya. Then turn to the Puttalam – Colombo Road and travel up to Puttalam. Thereafter travel along the Mannar Road passing Wanathavilluwa to reach the Malwila Raja Maha Vihara.
