Lahugala National Park is one of the smallest national parks in Sri Lanka. It is situated near Pottuvil in Eastern province. Although it’s small, it’s still considered to be an important habitat for endemic birds of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan elephant, and a variety of animals. The park also has three reservoirs which empties to Heda Oya River; they are Lahugala, Kitulana, and Sengamuwa. It was first designated as a wildlife sanctuary on July 1, 1966. Later it was designated as a national park on 31 October, 1980.

Getting to Lahugala National Park

From Arugam Bay travel along the Colombo – Batticaloa Highway passing Pottuvil up to Sengamuwa to reach the Lahugala National Park which is situated near Pottuvil in Eastern province.
