Kudumbigala Monastery is a Buddhist monastic complex that is situated near Panama in the Ampara district. It is believed to have been built during the era of King Devanampiyatissa, in 246 BC. The monastery was first established as a refuge for the Buddhist monks who wanted to escape the busy life in towns. More than 200 rock caves belonging to the Kudumbigala Monastery have been discovered by archaeologists. The monastery was greatly affected by the civil war as the government failed to protect the sie during this time. Therefore, Kudumbigala Monastery was abandoned and hardly anyone knew about it. The monastery holds the only cylindrical dagoba to survive in the country.
