Kirala Kele Sanctuary is a large area covered with mangrove forests in the Matara district in southern Sri Lanka. It consists of hundreds of acres of marshy lands with endemic vegetation including kirala trees. Kirala Kele Sanctuary is located just about 5 km away from Matara town. At present, the sanctuary stands as a key habitat for wetland biodiversity in Sri Lanka. Kirala Kele is home to approximately 103 species of birds of varying colours adding much beauty to the area.

Getting to Kirala Kele Sanctuary

From Mirissa travel along the Kamburugamuwa – Mirissa Road up to Palatuwa. Then take the Godagama – Sulthanagoda Road to Matara – Akuressa Highway in Palatuwa. Travel approximately 4.8 km along this route and then another 1.1 km along the Matara – Akuressa Highway to reach the Kirala Kele – Matara Road where the Kirala Kele Sanctuary is situated.
