Introduction to Hummanaya

Hummanaya is a natural blowhole and the one and only blowhole in Sri Lanka. Hummanaya blowhole is situated close to the fishing village named Kudawella, close to Tangalle. It is also the second largest blowhole in the world. Hummanaya gets its name due to the “hoo” sound which could be heard at a great distance when the blowhole is active.

Hummanaya is a natural wonder. This blowhole is caused when sea water rushes through a submerged cavern and is pushed upwards to create a mist of water to blow out from it. The sea water comes out of this hole due to the pressure created from the flowing underneath the shore. The water shoots up approximately every two minutes and reaches a height of 25 m – 30 m.

Getting to Hummanaya

From Tangalle travel along Tangalle Road towards Mihindu Mawatha passing Morakatiyara up to Kudawella to reach the Hummanaya blowhole.
