Handun Ella is a waterfall which is situated in Kottampitiya near Kitulgala. The waterfall has a height of 30 m. “Sandun” or “handun” means sandalwood and some say that there was a sandalwood forest here. Some others believe that the water used to smell of sandalwood. However, there is no evidence to say that these stories are true. The famous Belilena Cave is situated nearby. Handun Ella is best visited from March to July.

Getting to Handun Ella

From Kandy travel along the Kandy Road, Nawalapitiya – Ginigathena Road and Avissawella – Hatton – Nuwara Eliya Highway passing Gampola, Ulapane, Nawalapitiya and Ginigathhena to reach the Handun Ella which is situated in Kottampitiya near Kitulgala.
