Gokanna Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple situated in Trincomalee. It is located in the premises of Fort Fredrick, close to its entrance. Chronicles say that the Gokanna Vihara was initially built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century, at the top of rock where the Koneswaram Kovil stands at present. However, it is believed to have been destroyed by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The new Gokanna Vihara is located near the entrance of Fort Frederick.

Getting to Gokanna Vihara

From Trinco travel along the Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway and turn to Konesar Road. Travel towards the entrance of Fort Frederick to find the Gokanna Vihara.
