Doric Bungalow is situated along South-Coast Road in Arippu East, Mannar. Also known as “The Doric” and “Doric at Arippu”, it is the residence of the first British Governor of Ceylon, Frederick North. The governor, who was the son of the British Prime Minister, planned the building by himself. It was named as “The Doric’ because of its similarity to the Doric order style architecture of the ancient Greeks. Construction of the bungalow began 1802 and was completed in 1804. Ruins of the bungalow can be seen on a low beachside cliff.
