Arippu Fort, also known as Allirani Fort, is a small bastion fort which is situated along South-Coast Road in Arippu East, Mannar. This square-shaped fort with two bastions was built by the Portuguese and handed over to the Dutch in 1658. The popular English sea captain, Robert Knox, who also happened to be a prisoner of King Rajasingha II, escaped with his companion after 19 years of imprisonment and came to the Arippu Fort in 1679. Arippu Fort was later converted to a guest but was abandoned thereafter due to the civil war.
