The museum was established in 1992 and is maintained by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka. It was initially named as E. W. Perera Memorial Museum because it was housed in the residence of the late politician, E. W. Perera. It displays a variety of artifacts including regional flags, coins, clothing, pottery, knives, guns and weaponry used by E.W. Perera.
