Ancient Mathota Harbour Complex is situated in Thiruketheeswaram, Mannar. The Mannar Port, aka Mathota Port, was one of the most significant and famous ports in ancient Sri Lanka. The port is mentioned in the great chronicle “Mahavamsa” and is believed to have existed from the time of King Vijaya, the first king of Lanka. Excavations in the area have unearthed evidence or copper, iron and various other metals. Mathota Port is believed to have been a central point for trading between many countries.
