Okandagala Ella Falls

Okandagala Ella Falls is situated in the Nuwara Eliya district. It stands at a height of 63 meters and is an amazing sight to see during the eastern monsoon season. The water flowing from Okandagala Ella Falls reached the Belihuloya River during this time. Folklore say that there are treasure troves containing 32 crowns and assorted gems hidden in the rock of the waterfall. A visiting king asked “does that the rock contain treasure?” which led to the fall being named “okandagala” which means “is that the rock?”

Getting to Okandagala Ella Falls

From Kandy take the Kandy Highway towards Nuwara Eliya passing Wathumulla and turn to Mandarampura Road at the three-way junction. Travel about 2.5 km along the road which leads to Okandagala Mountain near the Makandura Reservoir. Hike the Okandagala Mountain to reach the Okandagala Ella Falls at the top.
