Ruwanwella Fort is situated in the Kegalle-Bulathkohupitiya-Karawanella Highway in Ruwanwella. It was initially built by the Portuguese in the 1590s at Ruwanwella in the Kegalle district. Later in 1665 the fort was captured by the Dutch who thereafter abandoned it. Finally in 1817 the British built a stone fort on the site of the fort with two bastions. At present the Ruwanwella Fort is used as a police station in the area.

Getting to Ruwanwella Fort

From Kandy travel along the Colombo – Kandy Road passing Peradeniya, Kadugannawa and Mawanella up to Kegalle. Then travel along the Galigamuwa-Ruwanwella Road up to Ruwanwella to reach the Ruwanwella Fort situated along the Kegalle-Bulathkohupitiya-Karawanella Highway.
